DIY Lace Crown- Guest Post

I had a baby girl on January 16th and some awesome guest posters are filling in for me while I get some baby snuggle time!

I met Amber & Nick at ALT SF and they are the married duo behind Wills Casa. Some DIY, some party, some home design and a whole lot of funny. I love their blog and I am so happy they took the time to share a post today, as they also have a new baby on their life- thank you so much!

Hey guys! I'm Amber from Wills Casa, a DIY and Home Design blog that I write with my husband Nick. Thank you Laurel for letting me guest post while you soak up every minute of your precious baby girl! I excited to share a tutorial for a lace crown I made for my little girl who is now 4 and wants me to know she isn't little anymore. Apparently this tutorial can also be used for tots who think they are teens. Let's get to it shall we.

Supplies:
Skinny Headband
Lace (I used 8 inches.)
Paint (I used Martha Stewart Metallic Gold.)
Mod Podge
Glue Gun & String

Brush your paint onto the lace. It's helpful to use a sponge brush and a regular paint brush to distribute the paint evenly and every where on the lace since it's so textural. I put wax paper down, so the lace would pull up easily once it dried.

Once your paint drys, pour on the Mod Podge. You want the lace to stiffen up and be able to hold its shape. Don't be afraid to use too much. It dries clear!

I let mine dry then sit rolled up tight for a few days. Overlap the lace keeping the pattern consistent. I matched up the peaks and hot glued them together.

I attached the lace crown to the headband with hot glue first. Then I threaded bakers twine around the crown and the headband for a stronger hold. It's helpful to loop it through the lace on both sides of the headband.

Tie the string and hot glue it under headband. The crown will stay secure once it's placed on your princess'  head.

Ramona loves her crown. It was originally made for her birthday, but she still likes to rock it on errands. It is a little weird to grocery shop with a crowned companion, but at least the crown can withstand my kid's shenanigans. You can check out more of her Zoo party over on Wills Casa.

You can find Amber & Nick on InstagramFacebook , and Twitter.

Decorating Essentials- Candles, Throws & Books & Magazines

I had a baby girl on January 16th and some awesome guest posters are filling in for me while I get some baby snuggle time!

Katie and I are friends in real life.  Haha, by real life I mean we did not meet online through blogging- we met when we both lived in Hawaii and now commiserate on how much we miss it.

She is so amazingly talented and I wish she could decorate my whole house.  She was recently featured on The Everygirl- be sure to check out her feature to see her beautiful apartment and read her inspirational story and check out her blog, Life With a Dash of Whimsy!  Thank you Katie!!

Essential #3- Candles!  Candles are pretty and help create the mood, even if romance isn't the goal.  Plus, the subtle scent is always a nice touch.  I am loving my gold dot Kate Spade candle right now, but Woodwick or the candles from Bath and Body Works are always a great choice too.

Essential #4- Throws (cozy blanket)!  Remember that time you went to a friend's house and watched a movie while you were shivering there on the couch?  I have memories like that too, which is why I always have one or two throws draped on a chair or the sofa.  They encourage your guests to relax and get comfortable, and they also add a little softness and color to your room.

Candles, throws and books to add some fun to your living room.

Essential #5- Books and Magazines!  A coffee table is not a proper coffee table if there isn't anything to read!  Books say something about you, and are great for a guest to browse if you're busy preparing drinks or an appetizer.  I love to choose books with great content that also have beautiful covers so that I can decorate with them as well.  Books and magazines are also a great way to give something a little extra height.  Think your lamp should be a little bit taller?  Add some magazines under it, and then add a little dish or candle next to the lamp to complete the vignette.
Now that you know the essentials, get decorating and then throw a cocktail party!  Your guests are sure to feel at home and comfortable.

Decorating Essentials- Lamps & Pillows!

I had a baby girl on January 16th and some awesome guest posters are filling in for me while I get some baby snuggle time!

Hi everyone!  I'm Katie del Castillo from Life with a Dash of Whimsy.  I'm so happy to guest post for Laurel as she and her family welcome another beautiful little girl into the world.  I'm not nearly as crafty as Laurel, but I do love a well decorated and pretty space, so I hope you enjoy my tips!

Whether you notice it or not, each time you walk into someone's home for the first time you immediately take inventory of your surroundings.  How is the furniture arranged?  Are the color choices pleasing to the eye?  Do I want to come back and spend more time here?  Imagine what people think when they walk into your home...is it inviting, warm and cozy?  The look and feel of a home has a direct impact on how it makes visitors (and you) feel.  A cluttered home can come across as unclean and overhead lighting can come across as harsh and unwelcoming.  On the positive side, a clean and well decorated home with good ambient lighting makes a person feel at home and at ease, and will most likely make them enjoy their visit and want to come back!  So if you are trying to scare off your in-laws or some pesky neighbors, read no further, but if you want to make your house more of a home, here are some of my favorite common sense ways to make a living room a nice and cozy place (for your guests AND for yourself)!

Essential #1-  Lamps!  Lamps are the BEST way to create a nice mood in any room, plus they are pretty and are a great way to add a pop of color.  Overhead lights are a no-no in my home, and I encourage you to do the same in yours.  Here are some of my favorite lamps from across the web, although TJ Maxx and Homegoods typically have great options as well, and are a great bargain!

7 lamps that will add some charm to any home!
1. simple teal lamp 2. snazzy cobalt gourd lamp (set of 2) 3. fun gold lamp 4. gold honeycomb lamp 5. white gourd lamp (same as #2 but cheaper!) 6. chevron lamp (so cool!) 7. gold tripod lamp

Essential #2- Pillows!  I am a sucker for pretty pillows.  They can add fun color, texture and pattern, and also enable you to take a more comfortable nap!  A chair or sofa without pillows looks naked, so if you don't have any pillows go get some!  There are lots of adorable and cheap ones on Etsy, or you could go the pricier route and snag some of the darling pillows from Caitlin Wilson textiles (how can you resist the fun prints?).  CB2 has some really cute ones right now too, so the options are endless!
Pillows to add some pizazz to your sofa.
Tomorrow, Katie will show us THREE more essentials- Candles, Throws, Books & Magazines!

Gold Leaf Paper Flower Vase

My paper bag vase was one of my most popular DIYs last year and it is also a personal favorite of mine, so I wanted to revisit the idea with another simple twist.

Materials:
Gold leaf pen (or metallic marker)Party paper bags in various colorsFlowersGlass vase or bottle
Create a design on your paper bag- whatever your heart desires.

Directions:
It's best to use a tall glass vase inside the paper bag. If your vase is too short the flowers will hang too low and push the bag down.

Add initials to the heart for an inexpensive wedding centerpiece!  Just save old glass jars for inside the bag- no one will ever know (unless you have really nosy guests who check...)

Iphoneography! Tips on Using Instagram & A Beautiful Mess- Guest Post

I had a baby girl on January 16th and some awesome guest posters are filling in for me while I get some baby snuggle time!

Roxy is here from CityGirlSearching and is an ah-mazing photographer and blogger.  I am so happy she is here to give us tips with some photography apps (I need all the help I can get!)

Hello everyone. My name is Roxy and I blog on over CityGirlSearching. I am a twenty something newlywed South African, living and teaching English in South Korea. I am a blogger turned photographer, and I have recently launched an online stationery store so I can share all the pretty stationery that I find here in Korea.

As a blogger, I have come to really appreciate the true value of good quality photographs, and since getting my first 'proper' camera a few years ago I can really see the difference the photographs have made to my blog from a professional point of view. But, carrying a big, heavy camera around all day just to capture my coffee dates just get frustrating. And then I have to fiddle and play around with the settings to get the light just right, and then never mind the editing that comes afterwards.

But, after getting my first iPhone last year, I cannot tell you how I have revolutionized my blogging. I am able to quickly snap bits of pretty-ness as I walk to work, sit at my desk and especially while out and about with friends. I can edit, add text and upload them to my blog in a matter of seconds. AMAZING!

Today I want to share with you my two favourite apps for blogging. I hope you find them useful. One of them is only for the iPhone (Instagram) but A Beautiful Mess is for Android users too. If you know of any other great apps that you love to use, please pop me a comment below.
Happy Snapping!

Instagram has been around for a while, but it is still one of my absolute favourite apps for quick and easy editing on my iPhone. When posting photographs to my instagram feed I try and use the same filter so ensure consistency with my brand. It also looks a lot neater and is easier on the eyes when my photographs have a similar feel to them. But that is completely up to you, you can go wild with the filters and frames available and are only limited by your imagination! Download Instagram for free through Itunes.
Here are some images I've edited using the Valencia filter:

When you take photographs on your phone, play around with angles and make use of as much natural light as you can. Using a flash really takes away from the natural feel of your photographs and makes the look plain and artificial. Natural light is softer and more forgiving on people and products.

A Beautiful Mess is a photo editing app designed and developed my one of my favourite blogs...A Beautiful Mess. This app allows you to add backgrounds, make collages, add text, add cute doodles and frames and change the colour of each of those elements. Its super easy to use and the results are pretty amazing. I often get readers asking how I add all these effects to my photos, and it's so simple. This app has also recently been released for Android users. You can download it through the itunes store for .99c

All of the photographs above were taken with my iPhone 4S. Nothing too fancy, but with a little bit of time and thought, you can really make your pictures pop!

I hope you found this post useful. Thanks again to Laurel for having me here on her blog!

x

Happy Valentine's Day!!

I cannot promise I can link love every week while on my baby leave, but I am obsessively pinning a lot lately during nursing sessions, so I wanted to share some favorite picks!

Fun- Valentine's Day Love pennants! I know today is the big V-day, but I think they can be cute anytime!  Also, I may be the last person to hear about Small Fry Blog, but I discovered it during a late night nursing session and LOVE the blog!

Fashion- Sunglasses will always fit despite baby weight- Pink Ray Ban aviators would be perfect for me! I live in Arizona, so year round sunglasses is a must!

DIY Ring Box Guest Post

I had a baby girl on January 16th and some awesome guest posters are filling in for me while I get some baby snuggle time!

Nash has a wonderful DIY & Food blog- Craft A Doodle Doo. I found her blog through a comment she left here and I fell in love with it! She is so talented and this DIY is so creative!! Enjoy!

Hello, I'm Nash visiting from Craft A Doodle Doo and am super-duper thrilled to connect with you all at Laurel's fantastic blog today!

How many of us are constantly looking for pretty and effective solutions to organize our jewelry?

This DIY ring box is one of those top-notch no-fuss solutions that's functional and looks downright dazzling at the same time!

The lightbulb moment was when I caught sight of hair curlers in the beauty aisle at the discount store. My first thought was that they would be perfect to organize my rings and ear studs and here they are in full glory!

How To Make Your Own DIY Ring Box

Materials:
  1. A sturdy cardboard/plastic box
  2. Glitter foam sheet/tape
  3.Pretty Washi Tape
4.Hair Curlers (the foam ones) in coordinating colors
5.A mirror to fit inside the box's lid (My used compact's mirror came to the rescue!)
  6. Faux Pearls
  7. A Pair of Scissors, Double-sided Tape and E-6000

 Directions:
 1. Start by covering the entire box except the lid with the washi tape. You can prime the box beforehand with white acrylic paint to cancel out any undertones of the box (since the washi tape is translucent)

Then, conceal the entire area of the lid using the glitter foam sheet or the glitter tape. 2.Cut the glitter foam to the size of the box's lid and glue down the mirror onto the foam. Now adhere the foam to the plain side of the lid as shown below.
3.Line double-sided tape across the length of the box's base. Cut the foam curlers to fit the length of the box and arrange them in any desirable pattern. (Since my curlers were long, I cut to align them vertically as well as horizontally in different sizes to avoid wastage)

4.Finish off by gluing down faux pearls at each of the four corners of the box's base. Use an extra pearl as a mini knob on the box's lid exterior. Secure velcro dots onto the actual box to make opening and closing a breeze.

I simply adore how the box turned out.. It looks pristine with the shimmer and the floral washi tape adds such a feminine oomph! This makes a marvelous gift idea for a friend and not to forget, your mum! Have a splendid week! Take care, Nash

DIY Fringe Chalkboard Banner

As announced yesterday,  I will be hosting a Pinterest party at Michaels Stores Sunday, Feb 16th 1-4pm as a Hometalk blogger in Phoenix, AZ.  I am SO excited!! The project I chose is the chalkboard banner!

I LOVE the chalkboard banner because you can easily change to any phrase for any party or event!
Saving money and reusing are some of my favorite things (along with glitter, anything pink, shoes, wine... I digress...

How to Make a Fringe Chalkboard Banner

Materials:
Chalkboard Banner (available at Michaels!)
Baker's twine
Tissue paper
Rotary Cutter (my new favorite tool!)
Self healing mat
Chalkboard Markers
Glitter Clothespins (optional)
Stapler

Directions:

Take approximately 5 pieces of tissue paper and layer on top of one another.  Fold over a quarter of inch of the paper on top and staple together.

Using the rotary cutter, start slicing on top if the self healing mat.  You can use the measurements on the mat to make your cuts all the same size or eyeball it (as I did)

The chalkboard banner comes with baker's twine (yeay!) String the twine through the holes and attach to fringe banner using glittered clothespins, tape, or glue.

I chose to use mini glittered clothespins because it looks pretty and they are easily removed!

If you are in Phoenix, AZ- come and meet me on Sunday Feb 16th from 1-4pm and make a banner of your own!  Directions to the store

I am in love with the rotary cutter, the fringes took mere minutes to make!

Honeycombs are another favorite of mine...

DIY Valentine's Duct Tape Basket

Scotch Duct Tape sent me some new colors & patterns to try out for the Valentine holiday- I shared a sneak peek on my Instagram last week ;) and I decided to make a little basket for Kalia! I think they would also be great for school aged kids to hold all the little Valentine cards they receive.

Kalia loves using her new duct tape basket- and I love that I was able to create an adorable basket using an oatmeal & coffee can- all I needed were some pretty duct tape colors to brighten it up!  I tried to get a picture of Kalia carrying hers around (she filled it with her favorite plastic animals) but toddlers do not SIT STILL!

Materials:
Scotch Duct Tape- Pearl White for a base color, then any additional colors you like
Coffee or oatmeal can made from cardboard
Scissors
Cardboard
Glue
Ribbon

Directions:

Cut your coffee can down, I used my bread knife, but if you are not the cook in the house, I do not recommend using your good knives. ( I was kind and gave myself permission)

Wrap the can in Pearl White duct tape.

Cut out cardboard hearts.

Cover cardboard hearts in duct tape.

Glue one big heart to middle of can and fill can with mini duct tape hearts for a Valentine heart gift!

The colors and patterns I used are: Metallic Cupcakes, Pattern Crazy, Pearl White, and Hot Pink

For handles, poke holes in the side and tie some ribbon or string!

It is a great kid craft- Kalia used the Scotch Duct Tape to cover my extra cardboard hearts-  I just have to make all the cuts for her!
